The Basic Formula (v = d/t)

The fundamental physics equation for velocity (speed) dictates that it is the ratio of distance traveled to the time interval. To get accurate results, time must usually be converted to decimal hours.

Example: 150 miles ÷ 2.5 hours = 60 MPH

Accounting for Stops & Traffic

If you drive at 70 MPH on the highway for 2 hours, but stop for 30 minutes to eat, your total time is 2.5 hours. Your distance is 140 miles. Your average speed drops to 56 MPH.
