Understanding Your BMI Result

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m^2).

BMI Categories

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
  • Obese: BMI 30 or higher

While BMI is a useful starting point, it doesn't directly measure body fat. Athletes or people with a lot of muscle may have a high BMI but not have excess body fat. Always consult with a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment.
